Apartment Farming has Arrived! Hydro Grow's Founder Scott Massey
Although the United States is one of the most efficient countries in the world in agriculture, it has an astounding resource cost; 10% of the nation’s total energy budget, 50% of its land, and 80% of all U.S. freshwater consumption. This cost comes with little benefit, as most produce is often times a week old by the time it is on display in a grocery store causing Americans to throw away 40% of all produce they buy. Hydro Grow's patent pending design solves this dilemma by growing organic plants two to three times faster than traditional farming methods within a user's home. This means that the three months a farmer would spend growing a head of spinach could be achieved in three weeks consistently, throughout the year using 95% less water. This would add an additional week of shelf life to the produce by growing it locally within the user's home. The user could leave the crops alive in the system until the moment they want to eat it, ensuring maximum freshness.
